National Theatre of Bulgaria "Ivan Vazov"
National Theatre "Ivan Vazov" was founded in 1904. It is a company
with a permanent ensemble of 37 actors. It is housed in a baroque building and
has four stages. The main stage - with an audience capacity of 750, a chamber
stage - 120, "The Theatre at the Top Floor" - 80, and "Stage
South" - 40. Its repertoire is varied in spectrum - from classical drama
to contemporary plays. Ten productions are done yearly and between 450 and 500
performances are presented per season. The theatre is financed by Bulgaria's
Ministry of Culture. In its lengthy history the company has toured extensively
in Europe, Asia, Africa, North and South America. During the past year it has
presented some of its productions in Italy, the Netherlands, Yugoslavia, Macedonia,
Turkey and recently, with "King Stag", received most of the major
awards at the Raduga Festival in St. Petersburg in Russia.
